Sandwich Baron Puts Breakfast and Lunch Boxes on the Spring Workday Menu
South Africa's largest sandwich group points early starters, training days and office teams to its breakfast range, lunch bags and made-to-order catering this October.
Sandwich Baron, South Africa's largest sandwich group, is turning attention to the working day this October, with its breakfast range, lunch boxes and training lunch bags offered alongside its familiar sandwiches and catering. With spring settled in and the last stretch of the business year under way, offices are filling up with planning sessions, staff training and year-end reviews, and the group's seventeen stores are set up to feed those days from the first coffee to the afternoon meeting.
Everything on the menu is made fresh to order. Sandwich Baron holds no ready-made products in stock, which keeps wastage low and means each order is put together when it is placed. Sandwiches come on white, brown, wholewheat or health bread, plain or toasted, with French bread (22cm) and Footlongs (35cm) available in white or brown.
Breakfast for early starts
For teams that begin the day early, the breakfast menu covers both a light option and a meat-free one. The Light Breakfast pairs scrambled eggs with toast, back bacon, cocktail pork sausages and grilled tomato. The Vegetarian Breakfast folds sautéed mushrooms and fresh tomato into scrambled eggs, topped with mozzarella and served with low GI toast. A Bacon and Scrambled Egg Pita rounds out the range for anyone eating on the move.
For a group breakfast meeting, the Breakfast platter brings together toasted sandwiches, spring rolls, ham and cheese muffins, chipolatas and fruit kebabs, and serves eight to ten people. The Early Morning platter offers an array of toasted sandwiches, including cheese and tomato, bacon and cheese, bacon, cheese and egg, and ham and cheese, and comes in both a half size and a full size.
Lunch boxes and training bags
October is a common month for workshops, onboarding sessions and on-site training, where everyone needs a self-contained meal. Sandwich Baron's lunch box range was built with this in mind. The Healthy Lunch Bag includes a wholewheat chicken salad sandwich, an apple or banana and water. Two Training Lunch Bags are available: one with a sandwich, fruit and a Liquifruit, and another with French bread, fruit, a packet of crisps and a Liquifruit. A Breakfast Bag combines a bacon and cheese sandwich with fruit salad, crisps, a Liquifruit and a mini yoghurt.
For heartier appetites, the lunch box menu also includes crumbed spicy chicken livers with a ranch salad, a chicken strip boat, a chicken wing lunch box, a spicy snack box with crumbed mushrooms and onion rings, and mixed lunch and snack boxes with samoosas, nuggets, meatballs and viennas. Add-ons such as biltong and fresh fruit can be included with an order.
Because each bag and box is packed individually, organisers can hand them out without plating, serving or cleaning up, which suits venues and boardrooms where time between sessions is short.
Catering that scales with the meeting
For larger gatherings, the group's platters cover a wide range of tastes and budgets. The Businessman's sandwich platter offers brown and white sandwiches with a selection of fillings and comes in half and full sizes. The Health platter uses low GI bread with lighter fillings. Other options include an all cheese platter, a cheese and biscuit platter, cold meat, chicken and cocktail selections, and the Go Bokke platter with ribs, sausage rolls, chicken strips, nuggets and meatballs. Most platters serve eight to ten people, and some serve ten to twelve.
Sandwich Baron has long focused on this corporate lunchtime market. Its franchise overview describes the business as a food producing and delivery company dedicated to better sandwiches, snacks and services, especially for customers who cannot get what they need from mainstream fast food outlets. The original Alberton store, opened in May 1996, built its reputation on fresh food and free deliveries and became the group's training division.
The same approach applies to smaller meetings. Where a full platter would be too much, the half sizes of the Businessman's sandwich and Early Morning platters give a team of eight to ten a lighter spread, while combining a platter with a few individual lunch bags lets organisers cater for guests who prefer their own portion. Because the food is made when the order is placed rather than taken from a display fridge, customers can plan around a set delivery time and expect it to arrive freshly prepared, which is especially useful for meetings that start straight after lunch.
Healthier choices on the same order
Mixed office teams rarely eat the same way, so the menu is designed to handle different preferences in one order. Banting options were introduced in 2016 and the group reports strong demand for them. Salads, wraps, baked potatoes, tramezzini and tacos sit alongside the classic sandwich menu, and customers can build their own sandwich or choose from the set menu. Avocado and spinach are offered subject to availability.
Ordering, delivery and loyalty
Orders can be placed through Sandwich Baron's online ordering system, which links to each store. Free delivery is offered when starting an online order, and regular customers accumulate loyalty points when they order, which adds up for offices that order lunch or breakfast every week.
The group's seventeen stores include branches in Alberton, Boksburg, Bedfordview, Bryanston, Centurion, Edenvale, Linbro Park, Lynnwood, Midrand, Klerksdorp and Middelburg, among others, with most open Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings. Each store lists its own phone numbers and email address on the store locator, so customers can contact their nearest branch directly about larger catering orders.
The group's own blog reflects the same workday focus, with recent articles on corporate food delivery for lunchtime meetings, presenting meat platters for gatherings and building appealing vegan platters for guests who eat plant-based.
A South African menu, chosen by South Africans
Sandwich Baron describes itself as 100% South African, with a menu chosen by South African customers over the years. That local focus shows in items such as the Go Bokke platter, samoosa boats and biltong add-ons, and in the everyday practicality of takeaways that travel well from store to office.
